Downtempo and smooth jazz tastemakers alike are singing the praises of Kush’s latest offering, Streams of Consciousness, Vol. 2. DJ Manny G of internet radio station MGZC out of New Jersey, describes the release as “having an intoxicating smoothness.”. Madame Fly, host of the beatconscious stream on Mixmeister Radio’s “Chilled To Perfection” loves the first 8 tracks while MGZC prefers the uptempo funkiness of the grooves on all of the later tracks on the album. Anji Bee chose Streams 2’s track “Freedom To Love” for her Chillcast Podcast #205 out of L.A. as did Chill’n’Groove’s Vancouver internet radio station along with another track, “Love Is The Currency (Part 2)”. Even RadioMagico out of Hamburg, Germany has put SOC, V.2 in its rotation.
Like its predecessor Streams of Consciousness, Vol. 1 this album has been culled from over 60 hours of live, improvised Kush performances and then meticulously re-created and recorded in the studio and then gently laced together with atmospheric electronica in Kush’s signature lush style. Bandleader, Etric Lyons’ vision from the beginning has been to capture the energy of Kush’s live sets and put them forth as a series of three volumes. The first (Streams of Consciousness, Vol. 1) is very similar to Kush’s sweeping first sets whose pleasing instrumentals and looped electronica are suitable as background for dinner or meeting and greeting. The second live set, like Streams of Consciousness, Vol. 2 begins to ramp up with more driving beats while subtly upping the beats per minute in preparation for the final set (the yet to be released Vol. 3 of the series) where casual listeners become transformed into dancing masses, moving in unison to the tribal Kush frenzy of dance inducing beats.
With this sixth indie release, Kush hopes to make lovers of intelligent, inspired and intriguing chill music’s lives a little bit more “Kush-ined” from the outside world.
